[Since apparently he's not allowed to come pick up Iwaizumi and that way he has time to go home and change after practice. He's not really too clear on the whole thing but showing up in a sweaty uniform is probably bad date etiquette.]
[Iwaizumi briefly wonders how he ended up offering to go out to dinner with Kageyama, but mostly he's able to put it out of his mind until after practice on Saturday
When he realises that he still doesn't have anything to wear.
After looking through his meagre collection of clothes, he eventually cobbles together an outfit that isn't entirely scruffy and makes his way to the address he gave Kageyama, awkwardly flipping open his phone to check the time and hoping he doesn't look too out of place as he waits.]
Practice went so well that he lingered for longer than he should have, nearly giving himself a heart attack when he finally looked at the clock and realized he had less than half an hour before he was supposed to meet with Iwaizumi.
He doesn't have time to worry about what to wear, he showers in record time and barely manages to pull a shirt over his head before he's running out the door.
He stops running a block away from where they are to meet up, slowing down to what he hopes is a casual walking pace and trying to get his heart beat back to normal. It doesn't help when he sees Iwaizumi standing there and his heart rate is back up again. At least he thinks he can blame the redness of his face on running all the way here.]
Hey...
[It was a lot easier to talk over text, not having to actually face what he now realizes is a huge crush head on. His palms are sweaty, his stomach is doing sommersaults and his throat feels scratchy.
Although that last one might just be because he put his shirt on the wrong way around and the tag is tickling him.]
[Kageyama is exactly late enough to make Iwaizumi wonder whether he's been stood up - which happens to be twelve minutes and thirty one seconds if anyone is counting. Which they are because Iwaizumi feels very awkward standing waiting and keeps flipping his phone open while concentrating on keeping his ears their usual colour.
He's still not entirely sure what to expect here. He invited Kageyama out to dinner, and the kid said he liked him but... he might be being rude but this is Kageyama. He'd probably say "I like you" to someone who passed him a water bottle when he was thirsty so he could play volleyball for three more seconds. And Iwaizumi has never even considered Kageyama as a romantic interest, much less-
Kageyama arrives, thankfully interrupting that thought.]
Hey, you ready to go up?
[The restaurant is up a set of slightly rickety stairs and has a wide open view of three convenience stores, a ratty park, a handful of apartments and a supermarket. But the food is good and it's not far from the station which is what matters.
Kageyama looks like he's either embarrassed to be here with Iwaizumi or ran at least part of the way, given the time Iwaizumi hopes it's the latter but he's not going to comment on it. That's not what you do on dates, right?]
[He doesn't pick up on and of Iwaizumi's nervousness, instead fully focussed on his own.
He actually did it, he managed to tell Iwaizumi he liked him (sort of) and now he's on a date with the guy he's had a crush on for longer than he cares to admit.
It suddenly hits him that this is his very first date. It had kind of been pushed to the back of his mind during his frantic run to get here but now he realizes he has no idea what to do.
Iwaizumi is the one who suggested dinner and thus Tobio assumes he at least knows what he's doing. It's easy to fall back into the habit of following Iwaizumi's lead. Seems like there are more things to teach him even now that they're off the court, senpai.]
[It's actually a good thing that Kageyama doesn't pick up on Iwaizumi's nervousness, if he did and then got nervous because of it they'd just end up in a feedback loop of nerves and fall down the stairs and die.
Sometimes Iwaizumi exaggerates when he's nervous.
He leads them up the stairs, manages to make it to the top unharmed.]
[Tobio tries his very best to not stare at Iwaizumi's ass as he leads them up the stairs, but it's really hard to not look when it's right there in front of him and looking the way it does.
He's in too deep.]
I ran here.
[Which was actually a pretty good cooling down exercise.
He takes his seat opposite Iwaizumi while nervously glancing around the restaurant, feeling completely out of place even though none of the other patrons are even paying attention to him.]
[That's... kind of sweet actually. Which is pretty typical Kageyama, kind of sweet, not much there, likes exercise.]
I can recommend around half the menu, but I haven't had the other half so you're on the own if you pick something I haven't tried. [He's come here a lot, mostly with Oikawa who insists on getting the same thing every time and makes Iwaizumi try something new so he can steal bites without having to risk having a whole plate of something he doesn't like, which works out when Iwaizumi cares far less about his food.]
[He almost looks embarrassed, wiping his hands on the hem of his shirt under the table to get rid of the sweat he insists came from running here.
Usually when Tobio eats out he just picks up something from the convenience store and eats it while walking home, he can count the times he's been to an actual sit down restaurant on both his hands.]
[He's laughing again, that's just a very Kageyama thing to do. Also a very Oikawa thing to do, though he only seems to ever be late when it's Iwaizumi waiting. Iwaizumi's getting the impression that Kageyama did want to be on time, which is a nice change.]
I like the tofu, but I haven't had it since the first time. [Thanks to Oikawa. Though Oikawa did make a good point that this is a seafood place and tofu is not seafood.] Probably going to have it today but... [He tries to think.] You'd probably like the seafood bowl though, if you're wanting recommendations. [Doesn't cross his mind that Kageyama might just be curious about what his crush likes to eat.]
[Iwaizumi laughing is a good sign right? If it was Oikawa Tobio might have considered that the other was making fun of him but Iwaizumi is nicer than that.]
I'll have that. [A seafood bowl does sound good. He really hopes it will be enough to shut down his stomach before it decides to announce it's presence.
He does file away a little note about tofu somewhere in the back of his mind though.]
[Nicer to Kageyama at least, he'd laugh at, rather than with, Oikawa in an instant.]
Right.
[Now that they're settled and talking about food it's occurring to him again that he's somehow ended up on a date with Kageyama, and that's just plain weird when it comes down to it. He clears his throat.]
[He would have been way more excited about practice if he didn't have a date with Iwaizumi right after. Most things pale in comparison to finally going on a date with the guy you've had a crush on for years.
It's... [He tries to figure out a way to voice the problems he has with school that won't make Iwaizumi think he's a huge idiot.] a lot harder than middle school.

[Sometimes Hinata follows him home and refuses to leave. That counts as friendship.]
okay
should i come pick you up?
[He thinks you're supposed to do that with dates.]
no subject
on what? a bike? i'll meet you wherever, haha. [Sorry, Kageyama but he thinks that idea is both cute and stupid.]
no subject
[Nailed it.]
i dont know where a good place would be
[Read: I've never been on a date before.]
no subject
what kind of food do you like? [He'd ask if he wanted somewhere fancy or casual but... he's going on this date too so that answers that question.]
no subject
[His favorite food is pork curry, what did you expect? Also he needs it after Saturday afternoon practice.]
no subject
you like seafood? [Probably, else he'd have been ejected from Japan a while back.]
no subject
[You can't see him, but he's very giddy about this whole development. Clearly he should have had his teeth pulled out earlier.]

He finds the website and sends Kageyama the address. He can't believe he's going on a date with Kageyama.]
no subject
meet you there at 6?
[Since apparently he's not allowed to come pick up Iwaizumi and that way he has time to go home and change after practice. He's not really too clear on the whole thing but showing up in a sweaty uniform is probably bad date etiquette.]
no subject
[And that works out with sorting himself out after his own practice... What the hell do you wear on a date with Kageyama.]
no subject
[Kageyama would be fine with a sweaty uniform, he'll be happy with anything as long as Iwaizumi actually shows up.]

Was your trip okay?
[A short perky girl shows them to their table when Iwaizumi says they want a table for two and places menus in front of them before whisking away to help deliver food to other customers. The restaurant isn't bustling yet but there are a handful of other people here starting on entrées.]

It was okay.

Even volleyball.]

Oh yeah? Guess we can't talk about it too much, opposing teams and all... [Which cuts out a lot of their conversation topics.] And how's school?
no subject
I guess not.
